‘One for you, one for me’: Tok Mat calls for PAS to put its unity talk to the test after Melaka election

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 12 — Umno should press for snap elections in one of the four states ruled by Perikatan Nasional to test the sincerity of PAS, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said today.

Mohamad, popularly known as Tok Mat, said the era of one-party rule was over, but Umno should not let other parties take advantage of its generosity in political pacts.

“So, after the Melaka polls, I want to ask the president to test the sincerity of our friends.

“Ask them to hold elections in one of the SG4 states,” the Umno deputy president said, using the initials for the four state governments controlled by PAS — Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Perlis.

“If they are really sincere about uniting the Malays, let us see what formula they would resort to.

“Our choice would be one for you, one for me. So, from the four states, two should be for them, two for us,” said Mohamad in his winding-up speech at the 2026 Umno assembly today.

Umno-led Barisan Nasional currently governs Negeri Sembilan together with PAS, with the former holding 18 seats and the latter seven.

Mohamad also reminded Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh to negotiate seat distribution with political partners without compromising Umno’s dignity ahead of the next state election.

The current Melaka state assembly’s term expires in December this year, but Ab Rauf has floated the possibility of dissolving it sooner.

“Umno has never relied on the sympathy of other people. So, Umno needs to build its own strength without banking on other parties,” Mohamad said.
