PONTIAN: It is official! The Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datuk Seri Wee Jeck Seng trounced Pakatan Harapan’s Karmaine Sardini with a huge majority to win the Tanjung Piai by-election.
The Elections Commission (EC) returning officer announced the results, saying that Wee won the parliamentary seat with a huge majority of 15,086 votes.
The results are as follows:
BN – 25,466 votes
Pakatan – 10,380 votes
Gerakan – 1,707 votes
Berjasa – 850 votes
Ang Chuan Lock (Independent) – 380

The EC also said there were 565 spoilt votes.
The results indicate that Pakatan only managed to secure about 26% of votes while BN garnered 67% of the votes.
The Gerakan, Berjasa and independent candidates will lose their deposits as per EC’s rules, a candidate must secure one-eighth of the total votes to get back their deposits.
On related matter, an elated Sembrong MP Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein was surprised by the landslide win and credited the win to BN coalition partners and PAS.
“It’s overwhelming. It’s beyond our expectations. We could not have done it without MCA and MIC.
“This is what the people are looking for. It’s a good start for BN,” said the former Umno vice president.
However, Hishammuddin cautioned his party members and supporters to not let the win get to their heads, adding there is still a long way to go.
“We should not be arrogant. This is just Tanjung Piai. We still have a lot of work to do to get back on the track,” he said.
Meanwhile, former PKR veteran Syed Husin Ali took to Twitter and blamed Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for the humiliating defeat.
He also said that the voting results was a referendum against Mahathir, adding the nonagenarian should now ‘do the right thing’.
“This is a referendum against Pakatan under the stewardship of Mahathir. The results are clear. The people are fed up and taught Pakatan a lesson.
“Mahathir knows what needs to be done now. Don’t dilly dally any longer,” he said, in a veiled message that the prime minister should make way for PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
