Nothing suspicious about Najib’s Ambank accounts

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Ambank relationship manager Joanne Yu Ging Ping testified that there was nothing suspicious about the transactions involving former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s two bank accounts.

This is despite the large amount of funds being credited into his accounts.

Yu said this confidently because the bank’s remittance department had confirmed that the transactions had gone through Bank Negara’s reporting system.

As far as she recalled, Yu testified that the only time the accounts were red-flagged by Bank Negara was when they were overdrawn which made Ambank wanting to close both the accounts.

She said this while being questioned by lead defence counsel, Muhammad Shafee Abdullah.

Earlier, while being cross examined by defence counsel Harvinderjit Singh, Yu denied covering up for fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low.

Harvinderjit: You are trying to cover up for Jho Low?

Yu: No.

Harvinderjit: You have been in communication with him over the past few days?

Yu: No.

She also disagreed to the notion that Jho Low kept Najib in the dark over the accurate balance in the bank accounts even though she could not confirm for sure.

Harvinderjit: The various actions of Jho Low were all designed to ensure Najib was never told of the accurate balance in the accounts?

Yu: I disagree, but I do not know.

Harvinderjit: Jho Low’s actions in regard to the accounts were designed to make Najib believe that there were sufficient funds in the accounts to issue checks?

Yu: There may have been discussions, but I do not know (precisely about) discussions.

Yu was testifying at Najib’s trial. The former premier is facing three money laundering, three criminal breach of trust, one abuse of power charges over funds amounting to RM42 million from SRC International, a former subsidiary of 1Malaysia Development Berhad.
