MRT lift robber gets 18 years jail time, whipping

KUALA LUMPUR: The man who brutally assaulted and robbed a woman in an MRT station lift on Valentine’s Day this year has been sentenced to 18 years jail and five strokes of the cane.

Sessions Court judge Mahyon Talib sentenced G. Thinathayaalan, 26, after finding him guilty of assault while committing the robbery.

“The prosecution has succeeded in proving the case beyond reasonable doubt,” she said, after the accused, who was not represented, gave his statement of defence from the dock.

The court ordered Thinathayaalan, an air-conditioner serviceman, to serve the jail sentence from the date of the arrest on Feb 18.

Thinathayaalan was found guilty of assaulting while robbing bank manager Lee Meei Shan, 48, at the MRT station lift in Taman Mutiara, Cheras at 6.45am on Feb 14.

He was charged under Section 394 of the Penal Code and punishable under the same section, which provides for maximum imprisonment of up to 20 years and a fine and whipping, upon conviction.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Nurliyana Mohd Jafri had asked the court to take into account the seriousness of the offence and pressed for a harsh punishment.

“In this case, the accused had injured the victim that resulted in bruises on the head, face and body and she also suffered trauma following the incident,” she said.

She added that Thinathayaalan had acted cruelly and the incident had gained public attention after the video clip showing him beating Lee went viral on social media.
