Movement Control Order: Volunteers step forward to help the public

IPOH: In Perak, three close friends are busy in the kitchen, and later pace the streets as they go around distributing food for families facing difficulty in getting supplies.

In Johor, meanwhile, the Johor Bahru parliamentary service centre has set up a ‘Food Bank’ aimed at helping the needy.

These are some of the inspiring stories surfacing throughout the country as many Malaysians come forward to assist front liners and the general public go through the two-week Movement Control Period enforced due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The trio in Ipoh, trader, Mohd Hussin Pak Wan, 60, restaurant owner Azlan Mohamed Saaid and Ipoh Barat Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) division chief, Mohammad Iskandar Abdul Rahman have joined forces to distribute food items to the Kampung Tengku Hussein and Taman Kledang Jaya mosques for them to be channelled to the needy.

“We started out with contributions from the ‘Iskandar Polo Club Endurance Team’ WhatsApp group members, after which many others came forward and contributed cash and food items,” Mohd Hussin said, when contacted by Bernama today.

These close friends also cook, and on Monday, they prepared 150 packets of food at a restaurant in Simpang Tiga here, to be distributed to the Perak Police Contingent Headquarters, 50 packets for the People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) and another 200 packets for residents of the Ashby Road flats.

Mohd Hussin said, preparations to cook rice and dishes such as ‘ayam kicap’, fried fish and cabbage, began at 8am before representatives of the police, Rela and flat residents collected the food packets at the restaurant at 11.30am.

As a precautionary measure to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission, they practise social distancing and wear protective gear such as face masks and gloves, besides ensuring their kitchen is clean at all times.

Over at the Johor Bahru parliamentary service centre, its workers and volunteers have been distributing food items to the needy in the constituency.

Requests have been pouring in by the day, Johor Bahru MP Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said.

“To those who want to donate, we have a team of volunteers who will get supplies from hypermarkets so that they can remain at home,” he said, via his official Facebook account.
