PUTRAJAYA:  Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik received brickbats from Maligned Indian Students and Parents Action Team over the ministry’s decision

The ministry reduced the number of matriculation seats to 700 from the initial 2200 that was offered by former BN government.

“Maszlee is the culprit. He initially claimed of wanting to allocate the matriculation seats for those in the B40 group,” said A Thiruvengadam of the Maligned Indian Students and Parents Action Team.

“Then when the issue went viral, the ministry published a statement that the 2200 seats offered then was a one-off offer which was debunked by BN.

“This was followed by Minister in Prime Minister’s Department P Waythamoorthy that the prime minister will resolve it on Wednesday.

“Why then did the ministry release a statement to enforce the ratio of 90:10 ratio for the Bumiputera to non Bumis? And Maszlee republished it on Facebook.  Doesn’t that supersede the Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s authority?” He said after the memorandum handover to The Leaders Online.

In the memorandum, Thiruvenggadam demanded that 2200 matriculation seats is given this year and 3,000 next year. He also requested for the opening of Asasi programs at all public universities in Malaysia which caters for the Bumiputera only.

Earlier he submitted a similar memorandum to the Education Ministry.

Another group, National United Wellbeing Association submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister’s Department earlier.

It’s president of M Selventhiran questioned the fact that the fate of Indians remain the same under the new government.

He also asked the reasons for such drastic decisions made that were detrimental to the Indian community.
