Malaysian police high alert: Temples, churches guarded after NZ mosque attacks

KUALA LUMPUR: Police had gone on high alert throughout Malaysia immediately after the attack on two mosques in New Zealand last Friday, said Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun today.

He said policemen were instructed to monitor all temples and churches for fear of any retaliation.

“Immediately after the incident happened, I instructed the chief police officers and all ground officers to be on alert. To monitor churches and temples and so on. Every action was taken for fear of retaliation,” he told reporters today.

Fuzi was asked to comment on security measures taken after a gunman opened fire on worshippers at two mosques in Christchurch, killing 50 and injuring dozens of others.

Following the arrest of 12 Filipinos and a Malaysian in Sabah last week for suspected involvement in terrorist activities, he said police are investigating whether members of Abu Sayyaf and Maute are in hiding in Peninsular Malaysia.
