Malaysia, a developed nation? Farfetched

PUCHONG: Former law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim has dismissed the notion that Malaysia will be a developed nation.

“Don’t want to sound too critical on Merdeka eve; but the idea that Malaysia will be a developed nation is farfetched.

“There is no country in developed world where clergy/ religious functionaries have more power than here,” he said via Twitter.

While he did not elaborate more on this matter, it is believed that he is refereeing to the cases of two concerts that had to be rescheduled to an earlier time. Both are scheduled to be held tomorrow.

The rescheduling was done as a mark of respect towards Awal Muharram which falls on Sept 1.

The committee that made the call for the rescheduling include The Islamic Development Department (Jakim).

Another related case is that concerns Sisters in Islam, a Muslim NGO.

Better known as SIS, the group had its application against the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department dismissed.

The judge in the case ruled that SIS should have raised the case in the shariah court instead.
