Malayan tiger found dead in Mersing, cause of death is unknown

PUCHONG: The Malayan tiger reported to be roaming in Ladang site 15, Ladang Aramijaya, Mersing, Johor a few days ago was found dead today.

In a statement, Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia (Perhilitan) said that the tiger could have been died two or three day ago, based on the condition of its carcass.

“Our preliminary investigation did not find any indication that the tiger was shot, snared or killed by any other dangerous act.

“Therefore, we believe that the cause of the tiger’s death might be due to ‘Canine Distemper’ which is same disease suffered by ‘Awang Besul’ in Terengganu in July last year,” it said.

Earlier, Perhilitan received complaints from the public that a Malayan tiger was found roaming in the farm area.

Subsequently, Perhilitan went to investigate the matter and found tiger footprints at the area.

Elaborating further, Perhilitan said that it would continue to investigate the cause of the tiger’s death and wait for the post-mortem report from the veterinarian.

The Water, Land and Natural Resources Ministry urged the public to call Perhilitan at 1-800-88-5151 if they have any information in regards to the Malayan tiger’s death.
