MACC expose: Najib sought UAE to help stepson, Riza Aziz

PUTRAJAYA: In another expose made the MACC today in regards to the SRC International Sdn Bhd, an audio clip featured former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak pleading help from United Arab Emirates (UAE) Crown Prince Mohammed Zayed Al Nahyan.

In the calls, made twice on July 22, 2016, Najib was heard asking Prince Zayed to shield his stepson, Riza Aziz, who was under the radar of US Justice Department.

Najib was asking a ‘personal favour’ from the UAE royalty.

The recording goes as follows:

Najib: I also have this personal request, your highness, that relates to Reza, my son, the problem is relatively small if there can be an agreement with Sheikh Mansor to have a new agreement signed and you will pay back according to the schedule.

That will show that it is a legitimate, very comprehensive package. At the moment, he’s under a bit of pressure in America, I’m worried about him because in case …. I would appreciate thus, the big package it looks positive, we can find a solution, I would appreciate if that agreement can be signed quickly with Sheikh Mansor or whoever can represent Sheikh Mansor so that we can begin to pay back so that it will appear as legitimate ….

When he received it, the bank cleared the source of money, so he was not aware at all where it came from. I don’t want him to be a victim when he was totally unaware about the source of money.

He generally believed it Aba (?) and an instruction of Sheikh Mansor. Remember, Your Highness also talked about helping him when we were in Abu Dhabi.

So, I need that agreement to be sorted out quickly, Your Highness. That’s my special request. We need to have that agreement signed.

Can you suggest how we can do that?

He said all he wanted was to make movies and there was an offer of a loan from Sheikh Mansor and Aba, Sheikh Mansor mentioned when we were at lunch, we thought everything was fine.

Now they’re trying to connect this with 1MDB’s money which is a shock to him.

But at time is of the essence Your Majesty, we cannot. We cannot leave it a day longer because we don’t want the department of justice to…..

Thank you, Your Highness, where do we go from here then?

We’ve dropped all the documents with him.

If we can call Amhari straight away, and then he can work out how we can resolve it?

Thank you, this is very bad. We fear it could lead to something very unforeseen and catastrophic, for me, for our government, and also your side.

This is not something which is not impossible. This is actually something within our means to resolve it. So, what do you want me to do, Your Highness?

The DOJ had alleged that Riza’s film production company, Red Granite Pictures, of using funds misappropriated from 1MDB to finance his films, including the infamous The Wolf of Wall Street.

Last year, Riza had filed a representation to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) for a review of the money laundering charges, involving US$248 million (RM1.25 billion) which was allegedly misappropriated from 1MDB, against him.
