Lim bows out from debate with Najib

PUCHONG: In a dramatic U-turn, DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang now says he refuses to debate former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak claiming it could be used to stir up racial rhetoric.

In a statement, Lim said that he had received numerous messages in the last 48 hours advising him to call-off the debate.

“There is a possibility that the debate between Najib and I could be turned into a Malay versus Chinese conflict. Therefore, I have decided not to go ahead with it.

“I know my decision will be greeted with allegations that I am a coward. My 53 years of politics is an open book for Malaysians to judge whether I am a coward or not.

“However, there is one thing I will not compromise – the higher interests of the nation and Malaysians,” said the Iskandar Puteri MP.

Two days ago, Lim challenged Najib to a debate session, with the title ‘How Malaysia became a global kleptocracy and how we can become a leading nation of integrity.’

Najib, who is also Pekan MP, took up Lim’s challenge via Facebook, adding that the debate should also be widened to other issues.

“I accept the topic but to be fair and we should discuss other topics too,” Najib posted on Facebook.
