Lawyer group: Stop obsessing over Nur Sajat, Mujahid
PUCHONG: Lawyers for Liberty is appalled at Minister at Prime Minister’s Office Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa’s for his outbursts on controversial cosmetic entrepreneur, Muhammad Sajad Kamaruz Zaman, or Nur Sajat.
Its legal coordinator Zaid Malek said Mujahid was being petty for singling out Nur Sajat, after she was pictured wearing female attire while visiting Mecca to perform umrah.
“We are concerned that Mujahid had urged Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to ban Nur Sajat from social media for causing unease among Muslims.
“This is a heavy handed action from a minister on an ordinary citizen,” he said, in a statement today.
Today, Mujahid said that further action will be taken against Nur Sajat after MCMC has completed its investigation on the matter.
Zaid reminded Mujahid that the right for self expression is enshrined in the Federal Constitution and cannot be arbitrarily limited, save for the purposes of national security, public order and other reasons stated under Article 10(2)(a).
“The feeling of unease within a certain category of the public is not a valid justification for limiting Nur Sajat’s freedom of speech and expression.
“Any action taken against her would be unconstitutional,” he said.
Zaid added that as a minister, Mujahid has a duty to protect the fundamental rights of all Malaysians, regardless of their religion or private belief.
