Latheefa’s appointment as MACC chief is final

ALOR SETAR: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has put his foot down amidst criticism over his appointment of Latheefa Koya as the new MACC chief.

The premier said he would not replace Latheefa with another official to lead the graft busting agency.

“I am forced to appoint another government official and Latheefa is among those who are not supposed to be an issue or create problems.

“No problems …, I can appoint many people. There are many officers that I have to appoint. She is one of them.

“That (Latheefa’s appointment) has been decided. It is final… Can’t be changing it then you would say I did a U-turn,” he said on the sidelines of Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir’s Aidilfitri open house in Seri Mentaloon.

Dr Mahathir said this in response to calls from various quarters who questioned the appointment of Latheefa that did not go through the parliament select committee on public appointment as promised by Pakatan Harapan in its election manifesto.

He also stressed that his ties with PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is warm and remain unaffected following Latheefa’s appointment.

“We have good ties. I don’t have problems with Anwar. He has the right to ask and I have the right to reply,” he said

He said this in response to calls by Anwar yesterday who wanted Dr Mahathir’s explanation since neither the cabinet nor Pakatan Harapan Supreme Council was notified.

Latheefa’s appointment, effective this month, was only announced on June 4
