Jalan Semangat to be renamed as Jalan Professor Khoo Kay Kim

KUALA LUMPUR: The Selangor state government will rename a major road in Petaling Jaya to honour the late historian, Emeritus Prof Tan Sri Khoo Kay Kim.

In a statement, state menteri besar Amirudin Shari said that Jalan Semangat in Petaling Jaya will be renamed as Jalan Professor Khoo Kay Kim to remember the latter’s contributions to nation building.

“Selangor Ruler, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has consented to renaming Jalan Semangat in Petaling Jaya to Jalan Professor Khoo Kay Kim to remember his contributions,” he said.

Khoo, 82, died due to lung infection on May 28.

He was credited as one of the most renowned historians in Malaysia. Khoo was also part of the committee that drafted the Rukunegara in the aftermath of the May 13 race riots.

On related matter, Amirudin said that the state government had directed the state authorities to only use Bahasa Melayu for road signages.

He said that the matter received special attention from the Selangor Ruler, who had decreed that only Bahasa Melayu to be used on official government signages, including the ones by local councils.

“Our stand is in line with Pakatan Harapan’s commitment to uphold the constitutional monarchy, special privileges of the Malays, the position of Islam as the religion of the Federation and Bahasa Melayu as the national language,” said Amirudin.
