Kuala Lumpur: Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) has autonomy to invite Zakir Naik, controversial speaker to speak at their campus, said Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching.

“I think the university is responsible for this. “This is part of their autonomy,” she said when met at the parliament lobby.

She was asked about the university’s action to invite Zakir for his talk on the role of Muslims as professionals in UUM on Thursday next week.

According to the poster, Muslims and non-Muslims are invited to attend.

In the poster circulated on social media, he is scheduled to speak at the UUM’s Mufadzam Shah hall on April 18.

The open event, titled “Duty for a Muslim as a Professional”, will take place between 8.30pm to 11.30pm.
