Ismail: No need for IPCMC, stop pressuring the police
PUCHONG: The Opposition rejected the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) Bill 2019 proposed by the Pakatan Harapan government in Dewan Rakyat.
Its leader, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaacob said the bloc made the decision after taken into consideration all the views of stakeholders involved.
“After looking into the finding of the IPCMC Parliamentary Special Select Committee, we were informed that the police also don’t agree to certain clauses stated in the proposed bill.
“Even the constitutional experts called by the select committee disagreed with the proposed bill, as IPCMC goes against the Article 140 and 135 of the Federal Constitution,” he said in a press conference yesterday.
Ismail said the Pakatan government seems to ignore the select committee’s findings and still wants to table the proposed bill in Dewan Rakyat.
Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador urged the government to give his team more time to deliberate on certain clauses of the proposed bill, citing it was ‘unfair’ to the police.
“Let’s give some time for the bill to be refined and the Parliament Special Select Committee to address all issues raised… So, there will be a good law which is fair to all – government, citizen and police when it is passed by the parliament,” he was reported saying.
Commenting on the matter, Ismail said, the government already has other laws to monitor all enforcement agencies such as the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC).
“We want the government to focus more on the welfare of our law enforcement officers and their families, especially those in Sabah and Sarawak, rather than pressuring them with the proposed bill,” said the Bera MP.
