Hisham: Five type medicines use to treat COVID-19

PUCHONG: There are currently five types of medicine will be used in treating COVID-19 infection in the country.

In a Facebook post, Health Ministry director general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the medicines are called Chloroquine, Hydroxychloroquine, Favipravir, Remdesivir and a combination of Lopinavir and Ritonavir known as Kaletra.

“We already have supply of Hydroxychloroquine, Chloroquine and Lopinavir/Ritonavir as these medicines are used to treat other illness and now can be used to treat COVID-19.

“Favipiravir and Remdesevir will be imported to treat the coronavirus,” he said yesterday,

Hisham two days ago announced that the World Health Organization (WHO) had chosen Malaysia as one of the centres to conduct clinical trial on a new medicine to treat the coronavirus called Remdesivir.

Hisham said the ministry is getting the supply of Favipiravir from suppliers.

Meanwhile, he added the ministry will get alternative supply of unregistered medicine if the current supply of medicine to treat COVID-19 is not enough.

“The ministry will always monitor all registered pharmacovigilance products to ensure its quality and effectiveness,” he said.
