Gov’t mulling bringing in new electricity suppliers to Malaysia

PUCHONG: The government is studying the possibility to allow new energy suppliers to enter the Malaysian market.

If the plan receives green light from the government, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) would no longer be the sole energy supplier in Peninsula Malaysia.

“The government is studying the proposal to liberalise the electricity retail sector to allow consumers to choose electricity suppliers other than TBN,” said the Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Ministry in a Parliamentary written reply dated July 3.

The reply was in response to a question posed by UMNO MP Ahmad Hamzah who wanted to know if the government is mulling to liberalise the electricity retail sector to promote competitive tariffs.

The ministry said that the government is studying whether liberalising the electricity retail sector would promote competitive tariffs for consumer.

“The ministry is expected to table its findings to the Cabinet soon to help determine the future of the electricity supply industry,” the statement reads.
