Ezam welcomes Dr M quitting after Apec, lauds Pakatan’s firm decision

PUCHONG: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Movement today welcomed Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s decision to step down after the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) meeting.

In a statement today, the NGOs chairman Mohamad Ezam Mohd Nor also lauded the Pakatan Harapan leadership council for taking the power transition matter seriously and resolving the issue once and for all.

“The decision shows that the government realises the importance of the power transition plan to our economic development and the nation’s future direction.

“Although we were hoping for the transition to take place in May as promised two years ago, we accept Pakatan’s decision to move it to a date after the Apec summit,” he said.

Last night, the Pakatan Harapan leadership council decided to allow Mahathir himself to decide on the date for the power transition plan without any pressure.

The Langkawi MP subsequently said that he would step down after the Apec summit, scheduled for Nov.

PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the heir-apparent to the premiership, accepted the decision and said he would wait ‘patiently’.

Ezam said that Pakatan’s firm decision on the power transition plan would derail attempts by some vested interests who are plotting to undermine Anwar’s ascension to power.

He also urged Pakatan leaders and those aligned to the ruling government to stop making contradicting statements on the matter as a consensus had already been reached.

“Pakatan’s leadership should be firm against these unscrupulous individuals, such as our PKR deputy president (Datuk Seri Mohamad Azmin Ali) who continue to issue statements contradicting the coalition’s stand.

“All these people, who are busy apple-polishing the prime minister, are actually problematic characters trying to save their own skins.

“We should never allow these characters to prevail at any cost,” said the former Umno senator.
