Express bus catches fire, almost no Aidilfitri for six

BANDAR PERMAISURI: It could have been no Aidifiltri for two drivers and four passengers of a double-decker Express Sani bus.

The bus, on its way from Kuala Besut to Kajang, Selangor, suddenly caught fire when it was at a traffic light junction in Chalok near here at about 10.30 am today.

However, all six managed to get out in the nick of time. The bus was almost 95 per cent destroyed.

The driver Hilmi Mamat, 46, said he noticed smoke coming out from the back of the bus when it was at the junction and tried to put out the fire with the fire extinguisher on board but the flames spread very fast.

“There were also explosions, I quickly ordered everyone to get out. My co-driver made a distress call and firefighters arrived a short while later,” he said when met at the scene.

The passengers were transferred to another express bus that was heading to Kuala Lumpur.

One of the passengers, Addiernizam Abd Aziz, 35, said he was sleeping on the upper deck when he was woken up by the driver and asked to head for the exit.

“There was no time to even bring along my belongings. My bag contained three months of my earnings as a professional diver in Pulau Perhentian.

“This is indeed disheartening because all my Aidilfitri plans have gone up in smoke. However, thanks to Allah that we managed to escape with our lives,” said Addiernizam, who was heading back to his hometown, Subang in Selangor, to celebrate Aidilfitri.
