EC’s Azhar unsure whether BN’s Rantau candidate broke election regulations

SENDAYAN: Election Commission chief Azhar Azizan Harun said he was unsure whether BN’s Rantau candidate Mohamad Hasan broke the law when the latter flashed his ballot paper yesterday morning.
“I myself am not sure about the rules regarding the action (by Mohamad). A person’s vote is a secret and others may not reveal how someone has voted,” he said last night.
“However, if the voter himself reveals his vote, I am not certain whether that is prohibited by the law.” he added.
Election watchdog group Bersih 2.0 had accused Mohamad of committing an election offence in holding up his ballot paper when he casted his vote at SJKC Chung Hua, Rantau.
Bersih was concerned that Mohamad’s action might encourage people in future to flagrantly expose their votes and thus influence others in how to vote. Bersih urged the police and the EC to take action.
A photograph of Mohamad and his ballot paper has been circulating on social media but it was not clear if any marking could be made out by viewers.
The Rantau polls yesterday saw Mohamad returned victoriously in a four cornered battle with a 4,510 majority.
