Dzulkefly on Pasir Gudang pollution: We will stick to our findings

PUCHONG: Health Minister Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad today was flabbergasted when told about Johor state exco’s claim that pigeon droppings could be the cause of the respiratory ailments suffered by SK Tanjung Puteri Resort students.

Responding to the claim, Dzulkefly said his ministry would stick to its own findings.

“The Johor exco member just gave his view. Let’s go back to our findings without the need to comment on the rights of anyone to express their views.

“We will stick to our analysis based on lab findings, clinical signs and symptoms of patients.

“And we are constantly monitoring the situation and will update regularly,” he told the media today.

Dzulkefly added his ministry was also working with the Energy, Science, Technology, Climate Change and Environment Ministry to monitor the situation.

Two days ago, Johor state executive councillor for health and culture committee chairman Mohd Khuzzan Abdu Bakar said that pigeon droppings could have caused the vomiting and breathing difficulties suffered by pupils of SK Tanjung Puteri.

Blaming it on the unpleasant odour, Khuzzan urged the Education Ministry to address the issue immediately.

Last month, about 111 primary and secondary schools in Pasir Gudang were ordered to close after students began to experience respiratory problems and vomiting, believed to the caused by air pollution.

On related matter, Dzulkefly said that that his ministry has engaged the services of an independent team of experts to investigate the air pollution incident.

“They will produce their own findings and we will compare it with our results,” he said.
