Dr M works on stimulus package despite political crisis

PUCHONG: While MPs are presenting their cases to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on which coalition should be forming the next government, Interim Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is back to business!

Appearing unfazed with the power struggle, Mahathir attended a meeting with Finance Ministry officials, to fine tune details on the proposed economic stimulus package.

In a Tweet, the premier posted,” Just finished a meeting with higher officials from the Finance Ministry in regards to the proposed economic stimulus package.

“The initiative will be announced soon,” said the Langkawi MP.

Yesterday, former Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said that his former ministry had finalised details of the proposed economic stimulus package and the paperwork has been presented to Mahathir on Sunday.

The stimulus package was designed to help economic sectors which have been badly affected by the coronavirus outbreak.

It was supposed to announced yesterday. However, Mahathir resigned as prime minister abruptly, followed by Bersatu and several other disgruntled MPs leaving the Pakatan Harapan coalition.

The move caused a political crisis, which is being dealt by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. The Ruler subsequently revoked the appointment of the Cabinet.

Mahathir had since returned on an interim basis, as the behest of the monarch, and is currently running the nation on his own.
