Dr M summoned to Istana Negara, possible caretaker govt in place

PUCHONG: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had been summoned to the Istana Negara to meet the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at 5pm later.

So far, it is not known why the Ruler had summoned the nonagenarian, who has tendered his resignation as prime minister at 1pm earlier.

PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has met the monarch earlier but the duo has yet to announce its outcome to the public.

As of now, Mahathir has quit as prime minister and relinquished his post as Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chairman.

The party had also left the Pakatan Harapan coalition, while former PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali and his gang of 10 had announced that they would form an independent bloc.

On related matter, it was widely speculated that a caretaker government would be formed following the aftermath of the power struggle within Pakatan.

Attorney-General Tan Sri Tommy Thomas was said to have told Malaysiakini that he was in the midst of preparing details on the matter.

“Yes, I’m preparing a press release. As to the contents, please wait,” he told the news portal.
