Dr M: My sole decision to appoint Latheefa as MACC head
PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has confirmed that the appointment of lawyer and former PKR member Latheefa Koya to head the Malaysian Anti – Corruption Commission was his sole decision that was not discussed in the cabinet.
Mahathir confirmed this when questioned by reporters during the Hari Raya open house at his official residence at Seri Perdana in Putrajaya today, saying that the suggestion to place her in the role was his alone.
“I did not discuss with Cabinet. Normally, I make the decision myself because I don’t have to ask the Cabinet as to who I approve,” he said during a press conference.
He said that he chose the former Lawyers for Liberty executive director due to her strict and truthful nature.
“Because she is very strict and she says what is the truth. She doesn’t mince her words. We need somebody who has a strong character,” Mahathir said.
Latheefa’s appointment as the new MACC chief commissioner was announced yesterday as part of reforms to institutions.
The appointment came about after the unexpected exit of Mohd Shukri Abdull, who opted for the optional early retirement for vacating the post became controversial.
Many quarters questioned if Latheefa’s appointment was a political one, based on her link to PKR.
