Dr M meeting Agong, PSM tells nonagenarian to ‘let go’
PUCHONG: Interim Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir is scheduled to meet Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah ibni Almarhum Sultan Ahmad Shah at 11am.
No details were mentioned by the Prime Minister’s Office on the purpose of the visit.
In a live address yesterday, Mahathir said that he working towards forming a unity government, which will be apolitical and focused on national agenda.
He also apologised to Malaysians for the current political impasse, adding that he resigned initially as he cannot be part of his party, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s plan to work with Umno to form a new coalition.
“I can accept Umno members that leave the party to join other parties. However, I cannot accept working with Umno as Umno will come in as Umno. So, I quit,” Mahathir was reported saying.
On related matter, Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) deputy chairperson S Arutchelvan urged Mahathir to withdraw from the premiership race, claiming the latter had ‘lost his mandate.’
“He should just release the nation’s political future to others,” he said.
The PSM leader also welcomed Pakatan Harapan’s clear choice for the next prime minister and urged the coalition to work towards fulfilling its election pledge.
However, Arutchelvan also cautioned Pakatan not to take the people’s goodwill for granted and get down to business immediately.
“Pakatan was too focused on the power transition issues in the past,” he said.
