Dr M confirms meeting with Opposition, mum on details

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad confirmed today that a group of Opposition politicians had met him a few days ago.

The politicians, he said, pledged to support him to lead as prime minister for a full term.

Mahathir, however, downplayed the significance of the meeting, saying he meets a lot of people all the time.

“Have you been spying on me? Yes, the meeting happened. I meet everyone, not just the Opposition,” he said.

Mahathir also confirmed that those who met him were leaders from PAS, Umno and Sarawak.

Recently, there were news reports claiming that Opposition leaders have met Mahathir to convince him to stay for a full term, instead of handing over reigns halfway through the process.

The leaders were claimed to be former Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, PAS vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Samsuri Ahmad Mokhtar, PAS secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chief whip Datuk Fadillah Yusof.

It was said that a high ranking Pakatan Harapan leader, who holds a Cabinet position, was also present in the meeting.

Asked if the minister in attendance was Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, Mahathir said,” It’s a secret meeting. I can’t tell you.”
