DAP to Fadhli: Kit Siang a Malaysian citizen, Zakir is not

PUCHONG: A DAP MP today hit back at Kota Bharu MP Ahmad Fadhli Shaari for asking DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang to leave Malaysia over his call for Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik to leave the country voluntarily.

In a statement, Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh said that Fadhli should learn to address the matter at hand instead of making childish attacks against Lim.

“Fadhli’s call for Lim to leave Malaysia for allegedly failing to understand the Federal Constitution is laughable and a reminder of the levels of which he and his ilk are.

“He should understand that Lim was merely echoing the views of Anas Zubedy on why Zakir should leave the country. I have also called for the government to extradite Zakir for legal reasons.

“So should Anas and I also leave the country, going by Fadhli’s logic?” asked Ramkarpal.

Yesterday, Malaysian Movement for Moderates member Anas Zubedy penned an article urging Zakir to leave Malaysia voluntarily as his presence in Malaysia was causing a rift between Muslims and non-Muslims in the country.

In response, Lim wrote an article to support Anas’ sentiments.

However, Fadhli criticised Lim for calling Zakir to leave Malaysia, saying the DAP leader had failed to understand the Federal Constitution.

The PAS MP also said that Zakir had the right to propagate Islam to non-Muslims and it was up to the listeners to hear him or not.

Hurling brickbats on Fadhli, Ramkarpal said that the PAS lawmaker should address the elephant in the room instead of making unwarranted attacks against Lim.

“The issue here is Zakir is wanted in India for offences committed there, including money laundering. Instead, Fadhli chose to attack Lim for diplomatically asking the Islamic preacher to leave,” he said.

Ramkarpal then reminded Fadhli that Lim is a Malaysian citizen who has contributed so much in his 50 years of service to Malaysian politics.

“However, Zakir is not even a citizen and he has created enough controversy by remaining here despite being wanted in India.

“I think it would be too much to ask Fadhli to debate on this matter meaningfully. I won’t be surprised if his tantrums continue in the future.

“I just hope that we can hear something sensible from Fadhli at some point of time,” said Ramkarpal.
