DAP rep calls on Malaysians to buy Palestinian products like olive oil, dates as sign of solidarity
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 25 — DAP’s organising secretary Steven Sim has reportedly proposed that Malaysians buy Palestinian products as a sign of support for the sovereign state.
Expressing his support for their independence, Sim, who is also a deputy finance minister, said this is the least he can do since it is impossible for him to join the fight in Palestine.
“Because of the Holocaust oppression of the Palestinian people, not only did they lose their lives, but the blockade in the West Bank made the Palestinian people be robbed of RM16 billion a year.
“Since 1967, approximately one million olive trees belonging to the Palestinian people have been confiscated. I cannot afford to fight in Gaza. But every year I buy Palestinian products such as olive oil and dates. We Malaysians need to support by buying Palestinian products,” he was quoted as saying.
Berita Harian quoted him as saying this in his speech at the “Malaysia Stands with Palestine Rally” held at Axiata Arena Bukit Jalil, last night.
Revealing the history of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land, Sim said the people of the land were forced to accept the reality of occupation by the Zionist regime.
He reportedly said that the fact had to be accepted because there were sympathisers who expressed support for the Zionist faction, because the Jews were victims of the Holocaust.
“We sympathise with oppressed people. The Jews were oppressed too during the Holocaust for four years, but the Palestinians were oppressed for more than 70 years.
“The Palestinian issue has a religious side because of the al-Aqsa Mosque. This is a humanitarian issue. In 1975, [Tan Sri] Lim Kit Siang once spoke at the Palestinian Revolutionary Parliament insisting that the struggle must be supported by all Malaysians of various religions,” he was quoted as saying.
Thousands attended the mega gathering last night clad in white and holding Palestinian flags, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim headlining the rally.
