Customs dept seizes 10.9 million sticks of white cigarettes, tax amounting RM7.3 million not paid

SHAH ALAM: A total of 10.9 million sticks of white cigarettes, believed to have been smuggled into the country, were seized by the Central Zone Unit III of the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) at West Port, Port Klang near here last June 16.

Central Zone Customs assistant principal director Datuk Zazuli Johan said the amount of cigarettes seized last June 16 was estimated at RM1.09 million on which taxes amounting RM7.30 million were not paid.

“The outcome of the investigation found that the cigarettes seized were imported without a valid Import Permit and no tax or duty paid,” he said in a statement today.

He said the modus operandi was to make a false declaration on the import of the cigarettes by declaring the consignment as general cargoes in the Check-In registry .

Importing cigarettes without an Import Permit is an offence under Section 135 (1) (a) of the Customs Act 1967 and Regulation 30 (1) of the Free Zones (Amendment) Regulations 2019, he added. –Bernama
