COVID-19: Sarawakian pastor becomes Malaysia’s first death case

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia recorded its first casualty from the COVID-19 outbreak today, with the fatality coming from Sarawak.

In a statement today, the Sarawak state disaster management committee announced that the victim was a pastor from the Emmanuel Baptist Church, Kuching.

“The pastor passed away at 11am today, at the Sarawak General Hospital. The state health department is still trying to identify the source of his infection,” it said.

The state government did not name the deceased.

For now, the state government said that it had traced 193 close contacts of the deceased and they are all undergoing home quarantine.

As of today, Sarawak has recorded 11 new positive coronavirus cases. Six of them are from Kuching, three from Limbang and one each from Betong and Lawas.

“They are now being treated at three designated hospitals which are Sarawak General Hospital, Sibu Hospital and Miri Hospital.

“There are 35 individuals being tested under Person-Under-Investigation while 204 are still awaiting test results,” it said.

Currently, the 45 COVID-19 cases recorded in Sarawak comes from four clusters; namely Sri Petaling, Kuching (church) cluster, Sarikei cluster and one more Kuching cluster.

The source of the last cluster is yet to be identified.
