Contractor, driver die in Pekan road crash

KUANTAN: A contractor and his driver died after a car skidded and hit the sports utility vehicle (SUV) they were travelling in at Kilometer 67 Jalan Kuantan-Segamat in Pekan near here, last night.

Pekan district police chief Supt Mohd Razli Mohd Yusof said the driver of the Toyota Fortuner Muhammad Syauqi Azmi, 32, and passenger Ahmad Azhar Abdul Wahab, 58, died on the spot in the 11.30 pm incident.

Muhammad Syauqi was from Alor Setar, Kedah while Ahmad Azhar was from Raub.

“The accident is believed to have occurred when a 26-year-old farm supervisor driving a Proton Wira car from Kuantan heading towards Runchang, Pekan lost control of his vehicle and entered the opposite lane and collided with the SUV.

“The impact of the collision caused the Toyota Fortuner to spin several times before skidding to the right lane of the road leading to Segamat,” he said in a media statement here, today.

Mohd Razli said the driver of the Proton Wira who hails from Runchang, Pekan sustained injuries to the hand and back.

The bodies of the two victims have been taken to Pekan Hospital and further investigations are being conducted under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
