Chin Peng’s ash – Let’s Get over it

Whatever said and done. Chin Peng is dead and gone. Yet history will have a place for him for the many reasons good or bad. How can we erase the history that he had the historical meeting with Tengku Abdul Rahman in Baling in 1955. It is all in our history books. Tengku made an election promise that he will bring peace if he wins the Federal election.

In 1989, Mahathir’s Government then had a The tripartite peace agreement between Thailand, Malaysia and the CPM in Hat Yai. That is a legitimate agreement and another part of our history. How are we going to erase it. In fact if there were so much at stake – emotionally then why did the UMNO Government in 1989 sign the peace accord. The 1989 accord once again brought much happiness and was described in Dr. Colin Abraham book as the “The Finest Hours”. The foreword for the book was by Mahathir himself.

Former IGP – Rahim Noor who was involved in negotiation knows this very well and he has been very consistent with his thoughts and words. He has claimed that the CPM’s struggle had been over since the party signed the Hat Yai Peace Accord with the government and in his own words reported in Malaysiakini “The peace agreement itself showed that the country wanted to let bygones be bygones and move forward after peace was achieved. And since the treaty was signed, there was no sign of any attempt by the communist members to revive their struggle or set up a new communist party.”

In 2011, some members of PSM were arrested and falsely accused by the Najib’s Government that we plan to revive the CPM. PSM took the Government to court and won the case and the Government paid us compensation. This itself clearly shows that the courts does not buy this story of CPM revival.

One important part of the 1989 accord was that CPM members can choose to live in a country of their choice that is either in Malaysia or Thailand. Based on this agreement as being confirmed by Rahim Noor himself, Chin Peng was allowed to come back to Malaysia alive . Therefore if a life person in flesh and blood is allowed to come back to his country, why not his ash. For the record many CPM members have come back since and had and have been living in Malaysia. Shamsiah Fakeh was one of them.

For the record, the CPM Chairperson Abdullah CD and his wife Suriani Abdullah had an audience with the Perak Sultan His Highness Sultan Azlan Shah and later in 1999, they performed the Haj sponsored by the Perak royalty.

While the Communist bogey was brought up again and again, yet the UMNO party has invited the Chinese Communist Party to attend UMNO General Assemble before. So let’s get over it. The war is over. Japanese also killed many people in Malaysia and yet we glorified them in the look east policy.

Therefore let bygones be bygones. Even if a witch-hunt is done in the current ash episode, it is not going to change the cause of history and Chin Peng’s role in Malaysia’s history cannot be erased as he is part of our history.
