Brickfields police foil armed robbery by fake cops during patrol
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — Three suspects were arrested early Sunday morning after impersonating police officers and robbing a victim at gunpoint in Pantai Dalam here.
Brickfields district police chief ACP Hoo Chang Hook said motorcycle patrol unit spotted four suspicious men around 3.30am on Jalan Kampung Pasir during a routine patrol.
When approached, a local man reported that three suspects pointed a gun at him and stole his identity card, mobile phone, and wallet.
The suspects attempted to flee on motorcycles but were quickly apprehended by the responding police team at the scene.
Police seized several items including a lighter shaped like a pistol, two motorcycles (Yamaha LC V8 and Honda RS150), and the victim’s personal belongings.
Hoo said the suspects’ method involved targeting lone motorcyclists or individuals by introducing themselves as police officers.
They would then display the fake pistol to victims and extort cash or personal items, threatening to take them to the police station if they refused to comply.
Background checks revealed that two suspects have prior criminal records, including outstanding cases under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
The case is being investigated under Section 395 of the Penal Code for gang robbery, which carries up to 20 years imprisonment and caning, and Section 170 for impersonating a public officer, punishable by up to two years’ imprisonment or fine.
