Bersatu supports Dr M as PM, rejects his resignation as party chairman

PETALING JAYA: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) has pledged its continued support for Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as prime minister.

The unanimous decision was reached at a special meeting of the party’s Supreme Council which lasted more than two hours at Menara Yayasan Selangor here yesterday.

In announcing this, Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Marzuki Yahya said the party had also rejected Mahathir’s resignation as Bersatu chairman.

He also denied allegations that some Bersatu MPs and leaders had left the party.

The meeting was chaired by party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and among those present were his deputy Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, vice-president Datuk Abdul Rashid Ansari, Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and Women’s wing chief Datuk Seri Rina Mohd Harun.

Muhyiddin announced the party’s withdrawal from Pakatan Harapan (PH), as decided by the Supreme Council at its meeting yesterday.

Mahathir relinquished his post as Bersatu chairman after announcing his resignation as prime minister yesterday.

Asked what prompted Mahathir to step down as Bersatu chairman, Marzuki said: “That I don’t know; maybe because he resigned as the prime minister.”

Asked why Bersatu quit Pakatan, Marzuki merely said the decision was made by the party president after discussions at the Supreme Council meeting.

Asked whether the party grassroots agreed with the decision to leave PH, he said: “Yes, it was a unanimous decision by the Supreme Council.”

On claims that the party would now be working with Umno and PAS, Marzuki said the party had not yet decided on this.

“We have not discussed that. We leave it to them (Umno and PAS); if they still support Mahathir as prime minister, we thank them for that,” he added.
