Ban political parties that fail to keep up election promises
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Annuar Musa (Ketereh-BN) has called for the ban of political parties by the Election Commission (EC) from contesting in the 15th general election as the parties failed to keep up their electoral promises made during the campaign for the 14th general election.
He said this move would ensure that the youth are not duped.
“We need to encourage more accountability of political parties contesting in polls as the youth are impressionable, and some political parties will fish for votes with promises they cannot keep,” he told the Dewan Rakyat when debating a bill to amend the constitution to lower the voting age.
He also accused the ruling coalition Pakatan Harapan of being guilty of failing to keep their word.
Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob concurred and called for the EC to act independently instead of relying on Putrajaya.
Citing the Cameron Highlands parliamentary seat by-election as an example, Ismail accused Pakatan Harapan of various electoral offences.
He also trained his guns at electoral reform watchdog, Bersih 2.0 of being bias in highlighting electoral offences.
“Bersih is not ‘bersih’ (clean). Previously they would take to the streets to protest against us, but now they are keeping mum over offences committed by the current government.”
