Asri: Nur Sajat was wrong but stop being holier-than-thou

KANGAR: Perlis mufti Datuk Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin said that it was wrong under Islamic law for Muhammad Sajad Kamaruzaman, or Nur Sajat, to wear female clothing while performing umrah in Makkah.

However, the religious leader said Muslims should counsel Nur Sajat on the matter instead of hurling abuses against the cosmetics entrepreneur.

Asri said that he was disappointed by the actions of certain people who condemned Nur Sajat, to the extend of saying the latter would be cursed by God.

“We need to advice him (Nur Sajat) in a good way. I just don’t agree with the public saying that he is cursed by God,” he told reporters after a ceremony to hand over the Tuanku Fauziah Hospital Dialysis Service Centre yesterday.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusof also expressed regret by Nur Sajat’s actions, who performed the umrah dressed-up like a woman which was against Islam.

In Kelantan, mufti Datuk Mohamad Shukri Mohamad said the worship of a ‘transgender’ Muslim remained valid even though the individual had changed his or her physical form.

However, he said Islam prohibited ‘tasyabbuh’ (vagueness) as it involved many factors, especially in regards to worship.

“What is important is that the ‘transgender’ individual must be careful and interact only with those of his or her original gender (while in the mosque).

In Kuantan, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Fuziah Salleh said the Federal Territory Mufti’s Office would release a statement on the matter saying the latter was better qualified to address the issue.
