Anwar tells Transport Ministry, Rapid KL to act on train overcrowding complaints

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 30 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has directed Transport Minister Anthony Loke to urgently address overcrowding on train services, warning that the problem could disrupt the daily routines of commuters.

The directive followed a complaint by a Threads user identified as siti.anisahj, who highlighted overcrowding at train stations in a post last night, according to a report by Berita Harian.

Anwar, who is also finance minister, said he had also instructed Rapid KL to look into the problem and ensure a swift solution.

“This (train overcrowding) happens frequently and it certainly disrupts the daily routines of the wider public.

“We (the government) must be more attentive and take action,” the Tambun MP said.

The prime minister’s response attracted widespread attention, garnering more than 25,000 likes, nearly 300 comments and about 1,500 reposts.

In her earlier post, siti.anisahj shared several photographs showing the crowded conditions faced by train commuters, particularly in the capital, on a daily basis.

“Assalamualaikum @anwaribrahim_my. Could we have more train carriages, please? It’s like this every day… driving means getting stuck in traffic, while taking the train means it’s packed,” she wrote.

On October 12, KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit services were reportedly disrupted following two cable theft incidents within several hours along the airport rail corridor.

The incidents forced passengers to endure longer journeys and changes to train schedules.

The theft involved about 180 metres of signalling cables, comprising two sections of 90 metres each, between Putrajaya and Cyberjaya Station and Salak Tinggi Station, near the 44km marker.

Earlier, on October 8, the Kajang MRT Line experienced overcrowding at Bukit Bintang Station, with the situation lasting about three hours due to an increase in passenger numbers.

The congestion was also believed to have significantly affected commuters at other train stations, including Bangsar LRT Station, where many passengers were left stranded.
