Amirudin to brief Pakatan presidential council on unilateral conversion bill

PETALING JAYA: Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari is scheduled to present a full briefing on the controversial proposed amendment to the Islamic Religious Administration Enactment that include provisions for unilateral conversion involving minors.

He would be presenting it to the Pakatan Harapan presidential council today.

Amirudin received the instruction to conduct the briefing from PKR political bureau that met yesterday. It was chaired by party president, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The proposed amendment is rumoured to be the factor behind a shortened Selangor state legislative assembly period.

The bill was proposed by the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) but did not see the light of the day since the speaker, Ng Suee Lim ended the legislative assembly session after 2 days instead of a week.

It also caused a split within Pakatan as the DAP came out strongly against the bill.
