AIA Vitality: Majority of Malaysian workers are unhealthy

PUCHONG: Malaysia’s Healthiest Workplace Survey 2019 revealed that half of the workforce in Malaysia suffer from stress and sleep deprivation.

The survey, conducted by AIA Vitality, said 53% of 17,595 workers in 230 organisations of different sizes and sectors across the nation get less than seven hours of sleep in a 24-hour cycle.

“More over, 51% of the employees surveyed suffer from at least one dimension of work related stress while 91% of them do not get a balanced diet,” it said.

The survey, which is conducted annually, also highlighted that 84% of employees reported suffer at least one or more musculoskeletal condition (such as shoulder and neck pain) – a result of working long hours at the office hunching over computers.

The survey results were revealed at AIA’s Malaysia’s Healthiest Workplace Summit 2019 recently.

AIA Vitality said the survey also showed 45% of the workforce also are not engaged in physical activity.

“32% of workers suffer from chronic illness such as high blood pressure, heart attack, kidney failure and cancer,” it said.

The survey also said employers suffer losses worth RM2.27 million a year when workers do not show up for work due to illness.
