Adib’s inquest: Syazlin was removed by the AG

PUCHONG: Lawyer Syazlin Mansor, who was representing the government on the inquest investigating the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim, had her appointment revoked by Attorney General Tommy Thomas.

In a statement, aide to Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin said that Tommy’s message was conveyed through a letter on May 23.

“The ministry immediately acted according to the AG’s advice and instructed Syazlin to withdraw from the inquest,” said Nor Hizwan Ahmad, who is Zuraida’s political secretary.

Yesterday, Syazlin, representing the Housing and Local Government Ministry and the Fire and Rescue Department, announced that she was withdrawing from the inquest.

She did not state any reason for the sudden decision.

Syazlin is also the wife of Zuraida’s press secretary, Ahmad Soffian Mohd Shariff.

Commenting on the matter, Hizwan said that Syazlin was appointed at an early stage to assist in the fact-finding mission surrounding Adib’s death.

“This was a matter of great importance to the ministry and the Fire and Rescue Department as one of the department’s man has lost his life in the course of his duty.

“And no objections were raised in regards to Syazlin’s appointment in the beginning by any of the parties involved in the inquest throughout the course of the inquest,” he added.

Hizwan also dismissed media reports which said that Zuraida has appointed Syazlin without the Attorney General’s knowledge.

He added that that Syazlin was acting on a pro bono basis for the case.

“Syazlin accepted the appointment and carried out her the work without any payment and did it in the spirit of public service.

“We take this opportunity to record our gratitude for the service she has performed,” said Hizwan.
