The incident is ongoing at the Virra Mall, located in the city of San Juan, which is part of the Manila metropolitan area.
The suspect is a former mall guard, Rappler outlet reported citing police.
The man is armed with a gun and grenades and has left one person injured, the portal reported citing police.
Negotiations are ongoing with the hostage-taker while a SWAT team has been deployed to the scene at the Virra Mall, according to the outlet.
The injured person is a security guard who is currently in a stable condition, Rappler cited San Juan Mayor Francis Zamora as saying.
