Health Ministry: RM250 compound awaits those who violate smoking ban on Jan 1
PUCHONG: Effective Jan 1, those caught smoking in public areas, including eateries across Malaysia, will be slapped with a fine of RM250.
First time offenders, however, can appeal to reduce their fines to RM150 at any district health office within one month of the date of the compound issued.
Repeat offenders will be penalised by RM250, while a maximum of RM350 fine awaits third time offenders and beyond.
Emphasising the matter, Health Ministry director general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said all restaurant owners should keep their dining area smoke free, without providing related facilities such as ash containers and shisha selling services.
He added that the owners are also required to make sure that the smoking ban signs are clearly displayed in a visible part of the dining area, in accordance with Rule 12 of the Tobacco Control Regulations (PPKHT) 2004.

“The cooperation of all parties, especially the Housing and Local Government Ministry, is needed for its implementation,” he said in a statement today.
Hisham said for those who wish to quit smoking, they are welcome to seek advice at all mQuit smoking services available at all government health clinics and hospitals across the country.
“They can also go to any accredited private Quit smoking service facility, or get additional information by registering at http://jomquit.moh.gov.my or calling 03-8883 4400 for more information.
“Hopefully the steps taken will help give birth to a healthier and independent generation free from smoking,” he said.
