Hong Kong protest: Chaos ensues in shopping districts after Christmas protests

HONG KONG: Chaos ensued in Hong Kong’s main shopping districts last night as the clock approached midnight.

Witnesses on the ground reported heavy use of pepper spray, as shops and other businesses were brought to an abrupt close on Christmas Day as clashes between anti-government protesters and the police continued around the city.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam said that the protests had ruined people’s celebrations but that her administration would “try its utmost best” to uphold law and order.

“Such illegal acts have not only dampened the festive mood but also adversely affected local businesses. The government will try its utmost best to uphold law and order, and restore peace in Hong Kong,” she said.
