Thailand beefs up security to keep out drugs during festive season
BANGKOK: Thailand is beefing up security at all entry points to prevent drug smuggling in and out of the country during the new year festive season.
According to Defence Ministry spokesman Lt Gen Kongcheep Tantrawanich, Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan, who in charge of security affairs, has instructed all security agencies and Interior Ministry personnel to crack down on drug syndicates.
“Drugs syndicates could plan to smuggle large quantities of drugs into the country before distributing it to other countries.
“Local and international drug syndicates could make Thailand as a transit point to smuggle drugs to destination countries. This will tarnish the country’s image,” Kongcheep said yesterday.
Kongcheep said General Prawit also instructed military personnel and customs officials to tighten security checks along the borders in the country.
“All agencies must enforce the laws and must not be part of the smuggling operations.
”General Prawit also urged the public to join hands with all relevant agencies including providing information in tackling drug activities in the kingdom,” he said.
