1MDB forfeiture suit: Youth group in; Pekida, research group out

KUALA LUMPUR: A youth group called Gerakan Belia Gagasan 1Malaysia will contest the civil forfeiture suit filed by the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) to recoup a total of RM270 million in 1MDB-linked assets.

This was confirmed by deputy public prosecutor Farah Yasmin Salleh this morning after case management in the chambers of the deputy registrar of the High Court in Kuala Lumpur, T Kavita.

“Gerakan Belia Gagasan 1Malaysia had no lawyer today. They will contest (the suit),” she said.

The case management of two other groups in regards to the suit was held today. Both the groups Pekida and research group, Yayasan Penyelidikan Transformasi would be withdrawing from the suit.

The court have set Aug 21 to hear the outcome of a representation that Pekida sent to the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

In the case of Yayasan Penyelidikan Transformasi, the prosecution’s bid to gazette its notice for third parties to attend proceedings will be heard on 6 August.

MACC sought to recoup RM407,101 from Yayasan Penyelidikan Transformasi.

“We obtained the date of Aug 6 to hear the prosecution’s application for gazetting of the third party notice before the High Court,” Farah said.

The foundation was not represented today.

The MACC filed a civil forfeiture suit against 41 parties in a bid to retrieve RM270 million that was distributed from the bank account of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in Ambank.
