Thaipusam, Chap Goh Mei celebrations in Penang successful

GEORGE TOWN: Two major festivals held in Penang yesterday went smoothly amid the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) infection, said Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
He said both major celebrations, Thaipusam and the Chap Goh Mei celebration in conjunction with Chinese New Year, drew hundreds of thousands of visitors.
“I am grateful that both major events were successful,” he told reporters after officiating the Chap Goh Mei celebration at Padang Kota Lama here last night.
He added that the organisers had taken the necessary steps to create public awareness on the precautions to be taken in public places.
Meanwhile, Penang Tourism, Arts, Culture and Heritage committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin said hand sanitisers and face masks were distributed to the public during the major events.
“At the same time, the crew for the programme also cleaned and disinfected the tables and chairs for the event,” he said.
He added that some dance performances from China arranged for the Chap Goh Mei celebration were cancelled as the dance crew from Lanzhou and Qingdao were unable to travel to Penang.
