MARANG: The ‘Bersih Pantai Ramadan’ programme could be a potential tourist draw, said Terengganu Tourism, Culture and Digital Technology Committee chairman Ariffin Deraman.

He said the gotong-royong (mutual help) programme introduced by the Marang District Office in collaboration with the Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK) is to clean up five tourist beaches in Marang from plastic bottles, glass, wood and waste that washed ashore.

It started on April 15 at Pantai Rhu Renggeh, Rusila followed by Pantai Angin Berbisik, Merchang (April 23), Pantai Kelulut (April 27), Pantai Pulau Kekabu (May 3) and Pantai Jambu Bongkok (May 7).

“The state government hopes that this initiative can be emulated by other districts so that the cleanliness of the 244-km stretch of beach in the state is always maintained for the comfort of tourists,“ he told reporters at the gotong-royong exercise here last night.

Meanwhile, Marang District officer Tun Ahmad Faisal Tun Abdul Razak said about 40 people participated in the programme last night after the tarawih prayers.

Tun Ahmad Faisal said the programme was aimed at educating the local community to always prioritise cleanliness and not to make Ramadan an excuse for neglecting beach cleanliness.

When met, several participants told Bernama that such activities should be a part of social responsibility for all.

Mohd Azimi Mohd Delana, 18, said he participated in the programme with his eight friends after being invited by Kampung Baru JPKK member.

For Marzuki Ismail, 60, the organiser was keeping the tradition alive by putting up 80 torches and oil lamps to liven up the activity.

“This programme needs to be intensified because it is able to attract tourists who want to experience the unique Marang environment in the future,“ he said. –Bernama
