Four caught over terror attack plans in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have caught four men who were planning terror attacks and assassinations in Malaysia during Ramadan.
The four men linked to an Islamic State ‘wolf pack’ cell was arrested during the first week of Ramadan in connection with a plot to attack non-Muslim places of worship and entertainment centres around Kuala Lumpur.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Datuk Seri Abdul Hamid Bador said the Islamic State (IS) sympathisers also wanted to avenge the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim, who was critically injured on Nov 27 last year.
The suspects comprised two from the Rohingya ethnic group, one Indonesian, and a local. They were caught in raids conducted between May 5 and 7 in Kuala Lumpur, Subang Jaya, and Kuala Berang in Terengganu.
“One of the group’s main objectives was to avenge the death of fireman Adib. All four have pledged their allegiance to the now-defunct IS terror group,“ said Abdul Hamid.
