Drop charges against protesters, says activist
PUCHONG: A rights NGO, Article 19 Malaysia urged the police to drop all investigations under the Sedition Act and Communications and Multimedia Act against those who staged protests against the new government last week.
In a Facebook post, its programme officer E Nalini said that she had just left the Dang Wangi district police headquarters with others who participated in the protests.
“Thank you to everyone who came today in solidarity with all of us. Thanks to the media who have highlighted the ongoing intimidation against activists, human right defenders and ordinary Malaysians,” she said.
Last week, more than 200 people gathered at Dataran Merdeka to express their disapproval of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s appointment as the nation’s 8th prime minister.
Apart from Nalini, human rights lawyer S Ambiga, social activist Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir and others were also involved in the protest.
They were also called to provide statement on the matter.
Nalini said that she was called by the Dang Wangi police last night to record her statement.
“Thirteen others were also called by the Dang Wangi police in regards to the gathering near Sogo last Sunday,” she said.
